New Brunswick Energy Efficient
New Homes Program

New house roof structure and blue skyThe New Homes Program was designed to promote the construction of highly efficient homes, thereby helping New Brunswickers:

  • Reduce their energy consumption
  • Save money through lower home heating costs
  • Lessen the impact of energy use on the environment
The fact that the province of New Brunswick is trying to discourage people from heating their homes with electric baseboard heaters has a lot to do with the modalities of this program.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

There are three kinds of grants, largely based on your home's heating system:

     1.  A basic grant of $1,000 for achieving the EnerGuide Rating of at least 80 or R-2000 certification  (even if your primary heating source is electric baseboards);

    2.  Central Heating:
  • Electric: A $2,000 grant for installing a central heating system, such as an electric boiler or an Energy Star  rated air source heat pump

  • Non-Electric: A $3,000 grant for  using a non-electric fuel source such as natural gas, oil, or a geothermal heat pump, or an EPA-rated wood or wood pellet furnace

  •     3.  An Energy Star Bonus of $250 for homeowners who install at least two of the following three Energy Star rated appliances (refrigerator, freezer, washing machine) AND Energy Star rated lighting in all home fixtures.

    The grant maximum is $3,250.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

To be eligible for a grant under this Program, first of all your home must have attained an EnerGuide rating of at least 83 (Note: this has changed, it used to be 80) OR be R-2000 certified.

All owners of newly constructed residential properties are eligible to apply for the New Homes Program.

Ownership includes landlords and non-profit organizations or trusts.

Ownership DOES NOT include building contractors.

Vacation properties and cottages are excluded.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In New Brunswick, the EnerGuide Rating Service and R-2000 are administered by the Canadian Home Builders Association – New Brunswick (CHBA-NB).

These are the steps to follow:

    1.  You (or your builder) submit the building plans to the CHBA-NB and pay the required fee;

    2.  The CHBA-NB reviews the plans and advises of any changes required to ensure that an EnerGuide rating of at least 80 will be attained;

    3.  Your home is built in accordance with the plans as reviewed and/or amended by the CHBA-NB;

    4.  Upon completion, your home is evaluated and receives a final, confirmed EnerGuide rating or R-2000 certification;
    5.  Your grant is approved and you receive your rebate.

DEADLINE

...I clicked to your site and found a great wealth of information. I'm about the least tool oriented person there is around, but I'm passionate about many of the topics you write about. And I find the writing to be very well done and informative even for a non-handy person like me. Well done.

Hey! Just wanted to compliment you on your site! I'm a new, first time homeowner, with a dirt crawlspace and have searched for hours on how to set it up.

Living here in Montreal, and the conditions aren't easy on a house and this site sure helped to answer some questions.

Thank you for displaying your work and experience!

BACKGROUND

A few years ago, I bought this fixer-upper for $10,000.

It had been vacant for six years, had no water supply, needed a new roof, and was likely to conceal an unsuspected number of nasty flaws.

Don't believe me? See these "Before" pictures.

My intention was to turn into as "green" as home as I could, within my physical, financial, and geographical limits – and to share this adventure with you, step-by-step and dollar-by-dollar.

I'm not quite finished, but I do have a few "After" pictures to show.
