Incentives, Grants & Rebates Programs
For New Brunswick

The province of New Brunswick offers several incentives, each tailored to a different situation. Chances are there's a program for you in the following list.

ecoENERGY Retrofit Grants And Incentives Program

This is the basic federal program. It works jointly with the individual provincial programs. All Canadian homeowners opting for retrofitting their existing homes are eligible.

(Well, I guess that should read "were" eligible because our dear Harper government has cancelled it ahead of their own deadline. So if you're reading this after January 28, you're already too late for the federal program, but don't give up on your provincial/territorial program yet.)

Keep checking here in case we get a decent government next time...

New Brunswick Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program For Low-Income Households

WARNING! The only way to get this grant is by following some mysterious rules that appear nowhere, and that nobody at Social Development ever tells you about!

Social Development is fully aware of this flaw in their program yet they are doing nothing about it. To add insult to injury, they are rude and arrogant if you point it out.

The main rule is this:

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, PROCEED WITH ANY WORK WITHOUT HAVING RECEIVED WRITTEN PERMISSION TO DO SO.

I wish I could tell you how to get this permission but I have no idea. You're on your own – good luck!

(And if you ever do find out, let me know so I can publish it here.)

Residential Off-Electric Baseboard Conversion Pilot Project

Power generation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New Brunswick, making electric baseboard the least efficient and least environmentally friendly heating option.

For a limited time, homeowners participating in Efficiency NB's Existing Homes Energy Efficiency Upgrades Program can convert their home's electric baseboard heat and electric water heating system to natural gas.

Efficiency NB and Enbridge Gas New Brunswick are partnering to offer several rebates.

...I clicked to your site and found a great wealth of information. I'm about the least tool oriented person there is around, but I'm passionate about many of the topics you write about. And I find the writing to be very well done and informative even for a non-handy person like me. Well done.

Hey! Just wanted to compliment you on your site! I'm a new, first time homeowner, with a dirt crawlspace and have searched for hours on how to set it up.

Living here in Montreal, and the conditions aren't easy on a house and this site sure helped to answer some questions.

Thank you for displaying your work and experience!

BACKGROUND

A few years ago, I bought this fixer-upper for $10,000.

It had been vacant for six years, had no water supply, needed a new roof, and was likely to conceal an unsuspected number of nasty flaws.

Don't believe me? See these "Before" pictures.

My intention was to turn into as "green" as home as I could, within my physical, financial, and geographical limits – and to share this adventure with you, step-by-step and dollar-by-dollar.

I'm not quite finished, but I do have a few "After" pictures to show.

If you want to follow me on this exciting adventure, you can subscribe to this site by RSS feed -- see the box below the navigation bar on the left.
