New Brunswick Existing Homes
Energy Efficiency Upgrades Program

Little green house with leaf growing out of it This Efficiency NB program for existing homes provides expert advice and financial incentives to New Brunswick homeowners who want to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and carry out retrofit projects.

There is a NEW program for existing apartments. This replaces the one for multi-units (MURBs), so if you're an apartment owner, better contact efficiencyNB before proceeding.

You'll find the links further down the page, under "Where to Get More Information". Those programs works in conjunction with Natural Resources Canada's ecoENERGY Retrofit Grants and Incentives program.

The grants and rebates offered under the provincial program are different from the federal ones, and they are available IN ADDITION to the federal rebates.

In other words, you do not have to choose between the New Brunswick program and the federal program - you apply for both at the same time.

You can read all about my own applications, including the two energy audits, step-by-step, on my Energy Audit page. Click on the link at the bottom of the page, or on the "Energy Audit" button on the left.

FINANCIAL INCENTIVES

  1. A maximum grant of $2,000 (up to 20% of the cost of renovations); OR
  2. An interest-free loan of up to $10,000; AND
  3. A subsidy of up to $400 towards the cost of an energy assessment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  1. Owners of single-family homes, row houses and side-by-side duplexes that have had a residential energy assessment (see below);
  2. Landlords who own those types of properties.
Vacation properties and cottages are excluded.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  1. You book an energy evaluation by contacting one of the energy advisors listed below.

  2. The advisor performs an energy audit of your home.

  3. The advisor submits his detailed report, which contains:

    • The current energy efficiency rating of your home and its target rating;
    • An analysis of its energy loss;
    • Customized recommendations for upgrades, in order to achieve an improved energy efficiency rating.

  4. You then complete some or all of the upgrades recommended. You have 18 months to do so.

  5. Then, you contact your energy advisor for a new assessment, a new report and a new rating.

  6. You submit the completed application form, along with the required documents.

  7. Your payment or loan is sent to you.

DEADLINE

At present, there is no deadline for applying for the the program, but once you have applied, you must carry out the retrofit within 18 months.

...I clicked to your site and found a great wealth of information. I'm about the least tool oriented person there is around, but I'm passionate about many of the topics you write about. And I find the writing to be very well done and informative even for a non-handy person like me. Well done.

Hey! Just wanted to compliment you on your site! I'm a new, first time homeowner, with a dirt crawlspace and have searched for hours on how to set it up.

Living here in Montreal, and the conditions aren't easy on a house and this site sure helped to answer some questions.

Thank you for displaying your work and experience!

BACKGROUND

A few years ago, I bought this fixer-upper for $10,000.

It had been vacant for six years, had no water supply, needed a new roof, and was likely to conceal an unsuspected number of nasty flaws.

Don't believe me? See these "Before" pictures.

My intention was to turn into as "green" as home as I could, within my physical, financial, and geographical limits – and to share this adventure with you, step-by-step and dollar-by-dollar.

I'm not quite finished, but I do have a few "After" pictures to show.

If you want to follow me on this exciting adventure, you can subscribe to this site by RSS feed -- see the box below the navigation bar on the left.
